Al Capone probably has made more money dead than while alive.
He has been featured in countless films and books.
Two new books that have surfaced on Capone by Chicago writers include Get Capone and Chasing Eliot Ness.
Both involve plots to get Capone that failed.
In Chicago, the gangster is seen almost as an iconic figure.
There are autographed photos of him in former speakeasies, although the subject is taboo in politics.
It has long been understood that the city of Chicago would much rather forget the name of the man who is recognized throughout the world and associated strongly with the city.
Eliot Ness is credited with bringing down Capone with his team of Untouchables.
In the book Chasing Eliot Ness, he hatches a plot to get Capone that fails and goes a little bit further than just using wire taps and busting up breweries.
In the city of Chicago, just about everyone has a story to tell about the Capone era.
Some of them are true, others are not.
The city of Chicago does not recognize Eliot Ness, whose death in 1957 was not even carried in the Chicago obituaries.
Most of what is said about both the gangster and the prohibition agent, whose names are forever linked, is fictionalized accounts, although mixed with some fact.
As both parties are dead as well as those who knew them best, no one can really tell man from myth any longer.
One thing is certain, there is still as much of an interest in this notorious era today more than ever.
With the names of Alphonse Capone and Eliot Ness forever linked in both fact and fiction.
One thing is certain, the stories are here to stay.
The books will continue coming out and more films will be made regarding these two men who battled during the days of the Great Depression and prohibition.
One of the most notorious eras of Chicago is never going away, regardless of the sneers from City Hall because the people are hungry for more of this fascinating piece of history.
And as long as there are people who are looking for stories about Eliot Ness and Al Capone, there will be books such as The Plot To Get Capone and Chasing Eliot Ness flying off the shelves in the Windy City.
