The Demand For Healthcare Professionals Is Growing

While the economy is struggling to recover and my people are having a hard time finding jobs, there's one area where jobs are plentiful. The healthcare industry. With millions of Baby Boomers set to retire over the next decade the demand for healthcare workers is greater than ever. According to the U.S. Department of Labor the demand for healthcare workers will grow by 70% over the next 7 years. Many recruiting firms have already begun to see an uptick in the demand for workers in the healthcare sector.

There are a number of reasons for this. One significant reason is the low number of people graduating with degrees in medicine, physical therapy and nursing in the past decade. Add to this the fact that hospitals are creating about 84,000 new jobs a year and it's easy to see why healthcare jobs are on the rise. This rise in demand has led to many nurses and other healthcare professionals putting in insane amounts of overtime. It is an untenable situation that can only be solved by more workers entering the healthcare field. For people looking for a career with a bright future healthcare is the perfect area to choose.

The health care industry has grown almost twice as fast as the overall economy over the past few years with no end in sight. Areas like social assistance, home care attendants, nurses and nurses' assistants are projected to need over five and a half million new workers in the next few years. The demand for highly skilled healthcare workers is projected to rise as well. Positions like VP of the Patient Experience, Chief Patient Rights and Safety Officer, Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Clinical Informatics Officer, Medical Directors and jobs in information technology are in dire need of more people.

Administrators, doctors, lab researchers and technicians are also needed to man the jobs being created by the search for better drugs and new cutting-edge technology. The positions being created are not only in hospitals, nursing homes and clinics but in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies as well. There is also a need for caring people to fill positions in the patient services and patient satisfaction fields. New hospitals and other health care institutions are popping up all over the country to meet the growing need for quality geriatric and long term care and they need staff as well.

Excessive overtime has led to an increase in medical errors as tired healthcare professionals attempt to prescribe and administer complex treatments and powerful new drugs. Only a significant influx of new healthcare workers can help to solve these dangerous problems. Healthcare jobs are recession-proof. People continue to get old, sick and injured no matter what the economy is doing. The new healthcare laws will force companies offering health insurance to hire a number of new workers as well. When that is combined with the growing number of retirement age Americans it is easy to see why the need for healthcare workers will continue to rise.
