How to Unstop a Drain With a Garbage Disposal
- 1). Unplug the garbage disposal. Open the cabinet doors under the sink. Find the electrical cord that runs to the disposal and unplug it.
- 2). Shine a flashlight into the disposal's opening; look for a hex head screw in the middle of the disposal's blades. If any obstructions are present, such as food, remove the obstruction using tongs.
- 3). Loosen the hex head screw in the middle of the blades -- do not completely remove it as it may slip down the drain. Shine the flashlight into the disposal while turning the blade flywheel back and forth with tongs until you can see the drain hole.
- 4). Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of white vinegar into the disposal. Boil a kettle of water while allowing 30 minutes for the mixture to set. Pour the boiling water into the disposal.
- 5). Re-tighten the hex head screw and plug the disposal back in. Run warm water into the disposal which should now drain.
