Narrow Bedroom Layout Ideas

Coping with a long, narrow bedroom such as a dorm or attic room can be problematic. Normal furniture arrangements can leave you with tiny pathways to squeeze around. But you can make your bedroom roomier by creatively arranging the space around the room and by using space-saving décor. - Multipurpose beds can help you to maximize the space in your home by allowing you to use less furniture while at the same time doubling your space. Loft beds place the sleeping platform up on stilts to leave room for a child's play space, desk, bookshelves or dresser drawers directly underneath. Captain's beds are built with dressers beneath the mattress so that you do not need to use a dresser or chest of drawers. A dresser that contains a bookcase allows you to eliminate shelving. Futons can be turned into a couch during daylight hours and trundle beds allow you to store a second bed in the space beneath the first bed.
- Shelves that are mounted to a wall help you to eliminate clutter by placing knickknacks, books, toys and other items where they can be reached. This will help you to keep these items off of the floor and out of the way. You can use a small shelf mounted at mattress level next to a bed to replace a nightstand, or place shelves above a bed with no headboard to take the place of a headboard with shelves.
- Typically a closet is used for storing clothing. But if you have an empty closet, that space can be reused as an exercise room or an office. A typical closet is wide enough for a rack of clothing. This space is sufficient for an office desk if you place a chair in the doorway. It is also wide enough for the narrowest of treadmills. You can create a platform that is 2 to 3 feet off of the ground. Place a cushion on top of this platform to create a reading nook or a quiet place to study.
