- African-Americans attending medical school can apply for UNCF/Merck Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowships. Administered by the United Negro College Fund, the fellowship program awards 12 grants annually, equaling $53,500 each. Recipients must use $43,500 of the grant to pay educational costs, and the remaining $10,000 must be used for research.
African-American medical students can also take advantage of the Minority Scholars Award, which is provided by the American Medical Association. Selected candidates get $10,000 for school. Applicants must be American citizens or permanent residents enrolled in the first or second year of medical school. - There are organizations that provide scholarship money to African-Americans who intend to enter a career in business. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People offers the Earl E. Graves Scholarship, which gives $5,000 to selected recipients each year.
African-American business school students can also apply for a scholarship from the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA). The NBMBAA Graduate Scholarship Program gives grants ranging from $1,000 to $15,000, but they are only available to members. One such organization is the Minority Corporate Counsel Association. The MCCA administers the MCCA Lloyd M. Johnson Jr. Scholarship, which gives $10,000 to a first-year law student. The recipient may receive money during the second and third year of law school.
The Association of Black Women Attorneys offers assistance to female African-American law students. The ABWA Scholarship Program is only available to students attending an accredited law school in New York, Connecticut or New Jersey. - African-Americans in graduate nursing school can find financial aid from different sources. One option is the Ethnic Minority Fellowship Program administered by the American Nurses Association. Recipients not only get tuition money, but a stipend, mentoring, career guidance and also dissertation support.
The National Black Nurses Association also gives money to African-American graduate students. Specifically, the Dr. Martha A. Dawson Genesis Nurse Leader Scholarship provides $1,000 to those pursuing a master's or doctorate nursing degree. Applicants must have a registered nursing degree to be eligible.
