A Deadly Trend in Weight Loss
Some girls actually do need to lose it and will cut back on their food intake and increase their activities.
Other girls wether they need to lose the weight or not will take another route.
The young women and men that take this route develop eating disorders.
After having these disorders some will turn to medical professionals and get treatment to get rid of the disorders.
The others that are left in this category will turn to the internet, where they find "professionals" that help them become "better" anorexics or bulimics.
All of these websites tell these young and impressionable people that are suffering from horrible life threatening disorders that what they are doing is ok.
They call themselves "Pro Ana" and "Pro Mia"(Ana standing for Anorexia and Mia standing for Bulimia).
These websites tell their visitors that they are worthless, useless, and they say that starving oneself or binging and purging is the only way to achieve perfection.
If you ask me, I believe this Pro Ana/Mia trend is an insane concept.
It would be as if you were to give a suicidal person a book on how to kill themselves properly.
Just in case you are the one who wonders "Hey what's the problem with letting these kids do as they wish?", let's look at some symptoms and medical problems related to having an eating disorder.
Amenorrhea (loss of period) Anemia Dry Skin Dehydration Degenerative Arthritis Depression Decaying or rotting teeth Hair Loss Infertility Osteoporosis High/Low blood pressure Hiding foods Irritability Excessive amounts of weight lost in a short amount of time Intolerance to cold temperatures Pancreatitis Weakness and chronic fatigue Seizures and sometimes Cancer or even Death.
These are only a few things that some will go through, there are much more to go along with it.
These Pro Eating Disorder (also known as Pro-ED) websites contain extreme diets, advice on fasting, and also tell visitors how to hide their eating disorders from their friends and families.
While doing all of these things they also provide pictures of models, celebrities, and people they know that are so rail thin their bones are protruding from their skin.
They call these photos "thinspiration".
It's really a disgusting and very sad thing, and something really needs to be done about it.
The saddest part of all of it is that their is not much we can do besides raise awareness, letting people know that these websites are in fact out their and to make sure their friends and loved ones are not one of their millions of visitors With all of this being said I would just like everyone to keep their eyes open, learn to recognize the signs of an eating disorder, and make sure their children are not visiting these sites.
This subject is also something that might need to be discussed with your children or loved ones if you start to recognize these signs.
