    • 1). Collect the information you will need to file your unemployment claim. The information you need is:

      - A Social Security Number
      - Contact information (address and phone numbers) for former employers from the past 18 months
      - Starting and ending dates for jobs held in the past 18 months
      - An alien registration number and expiration date, if not an American citizen

    • 2). Access the New Mexico Unemployment Insurance Claims System (link below in Resources). Select the "New Users Register Here" option. You will need to input your SSN, as well as choose a four-digit PIN number that will act as a password when logging back into the system. Enter your mother's maiden name so the department can certify your identify.

    • 3). OR call 505-841-4000, the phone number for the New Mexico Unemployment Insurance Call Center. Call center hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Representatives at the UI Call Center will assist you in filing a new, first-time unemployment claim. If you are filing on Sunday, you will have to do so online.

    • 4). Wait to find out if your application for unemployment has been approved. This will depend on whether your unemployment, your loss of your job, is deemed to be because of no fault of your own. You should have your first unemployment payment two weeks after filing the initial claim (there is a one week waiting period after the claim is processed).

    • 5). Certify for your New Mexico unemployment benefits weekly. If you applied by phone, you are given a day on which you should complete your certification. Call 505-841-2000. If you applied by Internet, you will certify for weekly benefits on Sunday or Monday by using the same UI Claims System. Weekly certification is set up as a question and answer system to see if you've completed your weekly job search responsibilities or if you've made any money during the week that could affect your weekly payout.

    • 6). Within 14 days of your initial unemployment claim, register with the New Mexico Workforce Connection (at www.jobs.state.nm.us). You must be actively seeking work while on unemployment. That institution will help you match up with jobs in your area that can get you back in the working world and off of unemployment checks.
