How to Decorate a Double-Sided Fireplace
- 1). Pick the decor for your fireplaces depending on the theme in each room where it is viewed. For instance, if the double-sided fireplace is in a more casual family room and a formal dining room, choose accessories in the same theme for each location.
- 2). Hang a large picture or mirror in the center of the wall above your fireplace mantel. This gives the area a focal point. If one side of the fireplace is in a Victorian-style living room, a picture of an old Victorian house is appropriate. Place a mirror on the mantel on the other side of the fireplace if it connects to a small or formal room, such as a kitchen or dining room area. Mirrors visually enlarge the size of the room and reflect the light from light fixtures in the room or from windows. Other ideas are a large family portrait or a beloved painting by your favorite artist.
- 3). Follow the "three-plus-one" rule for decorating the remainder of your mantel, as suggested by the Fireplace Mall website. Place three similar objects together at one end of the mantel. Candlesticks are an excellent choice, as well as beer steins, a collection of nutcracker soldiers or decorative plates. Stagger them so that each piece is not lined up in a straight row. The three items should be similar heights -- but not the same -- for the most attractive look. Position a large vase of flowers at the other end of the mantel, a clock, a sculpture or other large item that is approximately the same width or twice the height as the grouping of three items.
- 4). Pick a fireplace tool set for each room that coordinates with the decor. For instance, if you have a shiny, silver-toned mirror frame on a mantel, invest in a silver-toned tool set. If the room is rustic and in a country-style, invest in brass or copper-colored tools to set on one side of the hearth or near the fireplace.
- 5). Set a large wicker or straw basket, firewood holder or a large sculpture on the other side of the hearth to create balance in the area and to make it visually appealing.
