How to Fit Kitchen Cupboards

    • 1). Measure the dimensions of the back of the cupboard and transfer them to the wall where you want it mounted, marking out the square shapes where they will go. Generally, the bottoms of the upper cabinets will be 18 to 24 inches up from the countertop. Use your level when you draw the lines, and make sure they're all level.

    • 2). Use your electronic stud finder to locate and mark the studs in the wall within the marked-out area. Measure the positions of the studs in relation to each vertical side of the area.

    • 3). Measure and mark the back of the cupboard to show where the studs will be, measuring from the side edges of the piece by the same distance as you measured on the wall. Use your drill and pilot bit to put pilot holes in the back of the cabinet, at the position of each stud, about 6 inches from the top and about 6 inches from the bottom of the cupboard.

    • 4). Hold the cupboard up to the wall, on the marked lines that show where it's supposed to go. Use your drill and screwdriver bit to drive screws through the back panel of the piece at the pilot holes and into the wall behind it. Make sure to use washers.

    • 5). Set your level straight up and down against the front face of the cabinet and check for "plumb" (make sure it is vertically straight). Slightly loosen the upper or lower screws that are holding the unit to the wall, to bring out either the top or the bottom depending on your reading. Slide shims behind the piece, between the cupboard and the wall, to stabilize it.
