How Mothers Should Light Candles at a Wedding
- 1). Give each mother a white, taper candle before the ceremony. They hold onto the candles until the time of the event in the ceremony. You could also opt to display the tapers on the table with the unity candle.
- 2). Provide them each with a match or a lighter to ignite the candle, or keep a lighter or matches on the table with the unity candle if you want the lighting of the taper candles to be highlighted for the guests during the ceremony.
- 3). Inform the mothers of their cue within the ceremony to light the taper candles.
- 4). Instruct them to rise and light the taper candles either at their seats or at the front of the room at the unity candle table.
- 5). Allow time for the officiant to explain the significance of the two candles, the mothers lighting the candles for the children and the bride and groom lighting the unity candle together.
- 6). Relay to the mothers to then give the lit taper candles to their children, offering a kiss or a brief embrace to signify the moment, and then simultaneously the bride and groom light the unity candle.
