How to Install a Wall Opening for a Dryer Vent
- 1). Drill a pilot hole from inside the house through the exterior wall where you are installing the dryer vent. To make it easier to locate when you go outside to find it, look for a common reference point visible on both sides of the wall, such as a window, and measure the distance between the pilot hole and the reference point.
- 2). Go outside and locate the pilot hole. Drill a hole in the wall with a 4½-inch hole saw. Center the saw over the pilot hole.
- 3). Place the vent cap into position over the hole. Mark the vent cap's screw holes on the wall, then remove the vent cap.
- 4). Drill holes for the screws into the wall at the marks.
- 5). Connect the vent cap to a piece of duct and wrap duct tape around the joint to seal it.
- 6). Slide the duct into the hole and position the wall cap so the screw holes on the wall cap line up with the holes in the wall.
- 7). Screw the wall cap to the wall. Place silicone caulk on top of the screw heads and apply a thick bead around the edge of the wall cap to seal the joint between the wall and the wall cap.
