    • 1). Apply for an EIU number online. According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), businesses can apply for an EIN by filling out an online form that features an interview style questionnaire. Upon completing the form, the IRS will issue you an EIN that will be your permanent number and can be used immediately. However, the IRS also will send you a formal letter with the EIN for your records.

    • 2). Apply for an EIN on the phone by contacting the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933. After answering a series of questions, the IRS will approve your request on the phone and issue you an EIN number. You can start using the number right away.

    • 3). Apply for an EIN by fax, using Form SS-4 by fax. Complete the application and fax it to the number listed on the application. Provide a return fax number. After your application is approved, an EIN number will be faxed within four business days, according to the IRS.

    • 4). Apply for an EIN through the mail. This involves a longer processing time, but some taxpayers prefer this method. Complete the SS-4 Form and mail the form to the address listed on the form.
