The Fuel Pump Won't Work on My '99 GMC Yukon

    Removal

    • 1). Depressurize the fuel system, taking out the relay from the fuse box and then running the engine until it stalls; the engine should stall after a few seconds.

    • 2). Disconnect the Yukon's power, loosening the clamp on the negative battery terminal with a wrench on the clamp nut and removing the black cable from the terminal.

    • 3). Siphon out as much fuel as possible from the tank and deposit it in a legal gas can. Always use a vacuum pump or siphon kit; never remove it by hose and mouth.

    • 4). Raise the Yukon's rear end and support it on jack stands; never get under the truck without this extra support.

    • 5). Disconnect all hoses and lines from the fuel tank; the fuel and EVAP lines should all have quick-connect fittings where you press the tabs in, and the filler/vent hoses will require a screwdriver on the hose clamps.

    • 6). Raise your floor jack -- with a block of wood to protect the tank -- under the tank. Remove the tank strap bolts with a wrench, lower the jack, disconnect the fuel pump's electrical connectors and remove the tank.

    • 7). Unscrew and remove the pump's locking ring, grasping hold of one end of the ring and rotating it with locking pliers as you press the locking tab with a pointer. With the ring removed, pull out the pump.

    • 8). Disconnect the electrical connector for the fuel sending unit at the pump module. Remove the unit's retaining clip needle-nose pliers, then pinch the unit's retaining tabs with the same pliers and remove the unit.

    Installation

    • 1). Connect the fuel sending unit to the fuel pump using the tabs within the module's bracket and the electrical wiring connector.

    • 2). Insert the pump carefully back into the fuel tank, tilting it to keep the float from getting damaged. Line up the flange so the line fittings point in the right direction and then screw the ring into place with the pliers.

    • 3). Lift the tank back into positon on the Yukon and then connect the electrical connectors and straps with their bolts. Reconnect the fuel and EVAP lines and fill/vent hoses.

    • 4). Lower the truck off the jack stands.

    • 5). Refill the tank with the fuel and reconnect the battery cable and fuel pump relay.
