How to Replace the Spark Plugs in a 2000 Hyundai Sonata
- 1). Park the car on level ground. Open the car hood. Allow the engine to cool before beginning work on the engine.
- 2). Remove the engine cover retaining bolts with a wrench. Remove the engine cover. The four-cylinder engine has a narrow cover that protects only the spark plug area while the six-cylinder engine has a larger cover that protects most of the top of the engine.
- 3). Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Firmly grip the wire by the rubber boot and pull it up and off of the plug. Be careful not to pull on the wire itself. Work on only one spark plug at a time to minimize the chance of mixing up the spark plug wires.
- 4). Unscrew the spark plug with a spark plug socket.
- 5). Thread a new spark plug into the hole by hand as far as it will go and then use a spark plug socket to snug it one-quarter to one-half turn. Be careful not to over-tighten the spark plug. If a torque wrench is available, torque the spark plug to 15 to 22 foot-pounds.
- 6). Repeat for each spark plug.
- 7). Replace the engine cover and secure with retaining bolts.
