The Correct Way to Display a Flag
- 1). Suspend the flag vertically to hang it over a street. Position the flag so that the union---the blue rectangle that houses the stars---is always facing up. For example, on an east-west street, the union should be placed in the northeast corner. Display the flag in the same way in a window, with the union on the upper left as viewed from the front.
- 2). Secure the union at the peak of a flagpole when the U.S. flag is displayed at an angle, such as when hung from a window sill or from the front of a building.
- 3). Drape the U.S. flag over a casket as if the union were covering the person's left shoulder.
- 4). Attach the U.S. flag firmly to the right fender or to the right front of the body when flying the flag from a vehicle.
- 1). Place the U.S. flag in a prominent position, closer to the audience and on the speaker's right, when displaying it with another flag on a podium such as in a church or an auditorium.
- 2). Fly the U.S. flag with a state, city or other local flag by raising the American flag first. Secure the U.S. flag to the peak of the flagpole and display the second flag beneath the American flag.
- 3). Place the U.S. flag at the highest center-point if there are several local flags or pennants being displayed together. Keep the levels even and the flag sizes equal when displaying the U.S. flag with other national flags. Position the American flag to the far left of the viewer, and arrange the other national flags in alphabetical order from left to right.
- 4). March with other flags in a procession by keeping the U.S. flag in the front of the procession and on the marcher's right.
