How to Make Bo Staffs

    • 1). Subtract 2 inches from your height and cut the stick to that length.

    • 2). Place the stick on the ground and roll it. It should roll smoothly. If the wood bumps along the floor, it is warped and unsuitable for a bo staff. Uneven rolling also means the stick isn't completely round.

    • 3). Place a ruler on the end of the stick to measure the largest diameter. Rotate it around the wood's center point and keep an eye on the measurement until you get the largest measurement. Halve this to determine the radius. Set the geometry compass to draw a circle of that radius and draw it on both ends of the stick.

    • 4). Make slow, even strokes with the spokeshave to trim the wood down to a round shape. Sand it to make it smooth and remove any splinters.

    • 5). Hold the stick in front of you, balancing its midpoint on two fingers. It should remain balanced. If it tilts, the wood is too heavy on one side.

    • 6). Sand the bo staff again using even strokes, balancing it on your fingers periodically to ensure that it has equal weight distribution. The bo should be thickest at the center, approximately 1 inch in diameter and 3/4 inch at the ends.

    • 7). Coat the bo with wood varnish to strengthen and protect the wood. Store the bo upright to prevent warping. You don't have to use wood varnish on your bo, but it will make it last longer.
