Decorating Advice for Using Colors
- Look at what you can't change about the room. If the high ceilings make the room feel empty, plan to paint the ceiling a dark color to help bring it down. If you have a bookshelf built into the wall, make sure you choose colors that will match the shade of the wood.
- Consider the mood you want to create in the room. Light blues, shades of off-white and pale yellows give an airy feel to a bedroom, while dark mauve creates a rich, cozy feel.
- Get inspiration from a piece of art, rug or set of curtains. Choose three colors and designate one to be the main color, one to complement and another for accessories.
- If all else fails, try decorating with your favorite color. Or pick a color scheme that you have always liked and never had the courage to try.
- Stick with a general theme throughout your home. While each room should be different and unique, be sure to create some continuity as you move from one space to the next.
