Medieval Trestle Table
During that time, these were stationary table and mainly covered with a runner/carpet etc. They used to be quite long in size and were later called as refectory tables. After that, these trestle tables became a preference of feasts and banquets that were held in large estates and castles. They were a part of royal and noble families.
Trestle tables in those times were made as large as tens of feet. One was 54 feet in size. Due to their easy assembly and much storage space, they continued to be liked by people till today. So much so that nowadays they have become a basis for picnic tables and handcrafted dining tables.
In those days, craftsmen used to scrape wooden pieces for getting smooth surface. However, use of sandpaper in present times has eased this task. Old tables were not sealed or stained. Rather, they used to be cleaned with oily rags.
These tables became a part of military fields, wagons as well as ships. They indeed are one of the earliest examples of art pieces and therefore, may be found at some museums. Trestle tables have evolved a lot after those times. They became a part of modern houses readily. These tables were so elegant in look that they could not be said no. They give a royal look to houses and become a reason for numerous compliments on occasions.
These tables had come a long way in their usage. They are of much more uses than one can think. For example, they can me added to your existing dining table if you have more guests, used for holding exhibition, used to accommodate large quantity of food on occasions that require guests serving themselves.
