Instructions for Replacing CV Boots
- 1). Place a set of wheel chocks behind the rear wheels of the automobile. Remove the cotter pin from the wheel shaft using a pair of pliers. Loosen the shaft nut using a wrench but do not remove it. Raise the front of the car on the side that you need to work on. Place a jack stand under the car near the jacking point and raise it to the frame of the car. Remove the lug nuts with the lug wrench and take the wheel off the car. Remove the nut from the wheel shaft.
- 2). Drain the fluid from the transmission into the drain pan. Loosen the bolts on the brake caliper and remove it from the mounting cradle. Secure the caliper to the strut using a wire tie. Do not allow the caliper to hang by the hose or you will damage it. Remove the brake rotor from the wheel assembly. Remove the damper fork and the pinch bolt using a socket and ratchet. Remove the damper fork from the automobile.
- 3). Remove the cotter pin from the lower ball joint using a pair of pliers. Remove the castle nut from the ball joint using a socket and ratchet. Separate the ball joint from the wheel knuckle using the rubber mallet to tap the side of it until it breaks free. Remove the halfshaft from the wheel knuckle. You may have to use the pry bar to assist you. Remove the halfshaft from the transmission using the pry bar to assist in removing it.
- 4). Place the halfshaft on a table. Pry the clamps from the old CV boots. Remove the boots from the shaft. Place a new boot on the shaft and secure the clamp on one end. Fill the joint with wheel grease. Close the other end of the CV boot with the clamp. Insert the shaft into the transmission and push firmly until it locks into place. Insert the front end of the shaft into the wheel knuckle. Loosely install the nut on the wheel shaft. Insert the ball joint into the wheel knuckle.
- 5). Install the castle nut and tighten it with a torque wrench to 40 foot pounds. Insert a new cotter pin into the ball joint. Spread it open with the pliers. Install the tie rod to the wheel knuckle. Install the castle nut and tighten it with a torque wrench to 40 foot pounds. Insert a new cotter pin into the tie rod end. Spread it open with the pliers. Install the damper fork. Torque the nut to 47 foot pounds and the pinch bolt to 32 foot pounds using the torque wrench.
- 6). Install the brake rotor on the wheel assembly. Place the brake caliper in the mounting cradle and tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet. Tighten the shaft nut with a wrench. Install the wheel on the car and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Remove the jack stand from under the car. Lower the vehicle to the ground. Torque the shaft nut with the torque wrench to 134 foot pounds. Refill the transmission with fresh transmission fluid.
