- Stone fire pits are often built using natural grey stones. These stones are made of rough granite. Like natural stone, ledge stones are fitted together with cement. Ledge stones are normally left in their natural color.
- Flagstones can be used to support a fire pit that is close to the surface of the ground. The flagstones are a natural stone color. They are flat and laid on top of the ground like a stone walk. They come in atypical shapes and a variety of sizes, so they can be fitted together randomly.
- Cultured stone can be used for fire pits. It is made of other materials such as concrete, plaster and other mixes. Cultured red stone looks a lot like natural stone. It is very commonly used on modern fire pits because the fake stones are lighter and easier to arrange. They can also be shaped in any way for exact fit.
