    • 1). Choose a piece of decorative paper. She will probably keep this letter, so notebook paper won't do. Select paper that would look nice in a frame or a scrapbook. Purchase a new, high-quality pen that will look nice on the paper and has ink that is resistant to fading.

    • 2). Begin the letter by telling her something that will get her in a romantic mood. One idea is to reminisce about when you first met. Tell her how beautiful you thought she was then and explain over time how your love has grown. If you have a funny story about when you first met, now is a great time to remember that in the letter.

    • 3). Lead up to the proposal. Tell her you never want to be without her, and how much she means to you. If you haven't been ready to commit before, explain what has changed and how you know that she is the one for you. If you get stuck at this part, think about what you would say to her in your wedding vows. Why do you want to be with her? What makes her special? You don't have to be a poet, but you do have to be sincere and speak from the heart.

    • 4). Near the end of the letter, ask her to marry you. Tell her what life will be like with you as her husband and how you will be there for her everyday for the rest of her life. If you are afraid to make promises or if you have had a rocky relationship previously, say something humorous; for example, "Lisa, I know I've had my faults and I can't promise I will always be the perfect husband, but I do promise that I will always love you and I will always cook a fantastic dinner every night!"
