How to Become a Certified Addiction Therapist
- 1). Read about state requirements for becoming a certified addiction therapist. Visit www.nattc.org, the Addiction Technology Transfer Center Network, to find out the requirements to become a counselor in your state.
- 2). Not all states require many years of education to become certified as an addiction therapist. One state may require a master's degree, while other states such as Kentucky only ask for a bachelor's degree. As of 2010, California is the only state that doesn't require a degree to become a certified addiction therapist.
- 3). Pass a certification test. Most, not all, certified addictions counselors must attain state licensure before practicing in addition to passing a certification exam. However, an exam is still necessary in states that do not require state licensure.
