How to Repair Car Brake Pads Replacements & Turn Rotors Too
- 1). Move the car to level ground. When repairing the brake pads and rotors, it is best to be on flat ground to keep the car from rolling downhill.
- 2). Place the floor jack underneath the vehicle to raise it. It should be raised enough to successfully remove the tire. Position the concrete block under the vehicle to keep the car from moving.
- 3). Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels using the tire iron. Once this is done, it should be easy to remove the tire.
- 4). Remove the bolts securing the brake pads. You should now be able to clearly see the rotors. If they appear rusted and scuffed, remove them. It is best to have a mechanic turn your rotors. A mechanic has the device needed to evenly shave down the metal on the rotors, making them smooth again. If the rotors are extremely damaged, purchase completely new rotors.
- 5). Put the new brake pads on after the rotors have been replaced. A generous amount of grease should be placed between the brake pads and calibers. This will prevent the screeching sound that new brake pads produce. Secure the brake pads in place with the bolts.
