Painting Designs Tutorial
- Determine a design you would like to paint and a location for the painting. If you would like to create a custom design, draw it on a piece of paper for replication. If the design has multiple colors, separate the colors into separate drawings and mark the order of layers. For example, the background color would be layer one, the next color layer two and the top color would be the last number in the sequence.
- If painting the design on a wall, paint the wall with a base coat of paint and let it dry thoroughly. This will prepare the surface for the design. If painting on a different surface, prepare the surface with a base coat of paint appropriate for that material. Regardless of the surface, the base coat should dry thoroughly before you move to the next step. It is important to allow paint to dry before adding more paint.
- Apply masking tape to cover the entire area in which the desired design will be created. Place and secure the drawing on top of the masking tape and begin to trace the drawing with a craft knife. Cut through the drawing and the layer of tape to create a mask of the design. Once this is complete, press the edges of the masking tape firmly to the surface to prepare the mask for paint. If the edges of the masking tape are not securely adhered to the surface, it might not create a sharp edge to the design.
- Follow around the edge of the masking tape, painting inward to be sure paint does not seep under the masking tape. Cover the entire masked surface, making sure the coat of paint completely covers the surface. Allow the paint to dry and add a second coat of paint. Be sure not to extend beyond the surface of the masking tape. Once the layer is completely dry, remove the masking tape to reveal the pattern. Continue this process with each layer of color, allowing the paint to dry thorough between steps.
