Can AOL be used with DSL?

    • AOL was once an Internet service provider that focused solely on providing access through dial-up. However, broadband access started becoming increasingly popular, forcing the company to shift its strategy. Since 2004, AOL has allowed access via broadband connections like DSL and cable. In 2006, AOL began offering this service for free.

    Signup

    • AOL Desktop software can be downloaded from the AOL website. Once you install AOL and start it for the first time, you will be asked to sign up and choose an AOL screen name. This screen name serves as your identity on the service.

    Features

    • The AOL service grants you access to exclusive content, AOL chat rooms and an AOL.com email address. You can also send instant messages to other AOL users using the software's integrated messaging platform.

    Accessibility

    • For those on a DSL or other broadband connection, the AOL software is not necessary to access AOL features.

    Dial-up Backup

    • AOL does offer dial-up plans, though these have taken a backseat in the company's strategy and are often referred to as "back-up" accounts due to the prevalence of broadband Internet access. AOL provides dial-up accounts starting at $9.99 per month for unlimited access.
