Armed security officers protect people and property with the help of a firearm. Armed security officers work for the government as well as private companies and individuals. These security officers have the authority to use deadly force if necessary. Strict requirements help ensure only the best candidates become armed security officers. - According to the Transportation Security Administration, you have to be at least 21 years old and a U.S. citizen or legal immigrant to become an armed security officer. You also must be a high school graduate. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states employers require armed security officers to undergo drug testing during the hiring process as well as random drug tests throughout employment.
- Armed security officers may benefit from education backgrounds in criminal justice, public safety and security management. In fact, some employers require candidates to have an associate degree in one of the above subjects.
- Most employers require armed security guards to have experience in providing unarmed security. Employers often favor applicants with law enforcement or military experience.
- Armed security officer training covers use of firearms and other weapons, the proper use of force and first aid and emergency procedures. Officers also learn about laws regarding security, detaining suspects and conducting searches. The BLS states training should take at least 48 hours and include written and hands-on assessments.
- Employers require a current gun license for armed security officers and some states require a security guard license. Many employers require certification in first aid. Although security certification is often not a requirement, the security professional organization ASIS International provides the Certified Protection Professional certification, which is considered an asset and may give you an edge over other job seekers.
- Armed security guards must be in good mental and physical health. Employers will not hire a person with a history of mental illness or other behavioral or emotional problems. In addition, armed security officers must be in good physical condition and able to perform all the duties of the job.
- Potential armed security officers undergo extensive background and criminal record checks. Employers check former employment and character references as well as criminal, credit and financial records.
