How to Align Objects Relative to Other Objects in Illustrator

  • 1). Click on the File menu, then Preferences, and choose Smart Guides.

  • 2). Turn Smart Guides on.

  • 3). Create an object on the artboard.

  • 4). Select the anchor point you want to use.

  • 5). Note that as you move the cursor, the Smart Guides create lines and angles to assist you in your placement. Move your cursor to the angle you want, then click and drag to create your second object.

  • 6). See that your second object is now aligned with your first object according to the angle you selected.
