How to Get Ordained to Marry
- 1). Find an online ordination site. The Universal Life Church (see Resources) is one of the most popular sites for online ordination. It is a nondenominational church that accepts almost all applicants. The Universal Life Church charges no fee to become ordained to marry couples.
- 2). Fill out the application for ordination. You will need to give your full legal name and address in order to be accepted into the Universal Life Church ministry. You must provide your email address as well.
- 3). Watch your email for approval of your ordination. Within 24 hours, the Universal Life Church will let you know by email if you are ordained. The organization only denies suspicious-looking applications. Click on the link included in the email to access your printable ordination certificate with your legal name printed on it.
- 4). Purchase a hard copy of your license or certificate of ordination. Although the Universal Life Church allows you to print out a copy of your certificate for free, you should pay to purchase a hard copy of the certificate, in order to prove the validity of your license or certificate if you plan to marry a couple legally.
- 5). Check the local marriage laws. Most online ordinations are accepted in all 50 states, but ensure that the state law where the marriage will take place allows you to legally marry people with your ordination certificate.
