Wood Shingle Techniques
- The most important factor in choosing wood shingles is durability. You want to find a shingle type that is most resistant to decay. The most commonly used wood for shingles is western red cedar, but treated yellow pine is used as well. These woods, when properly treated and maintained, can result in a solid and durable roof for up to 30 years.
- Finishes can be applied to wood shingles to prevent decay and add color. Paint should never be used on shingles as the finish is prone to cracking, which can allow moisture to enter. Oil based stains are the best to use on roofs because they give the desired color while still allowing the texture and grain of the wood to be visible.
- Properly installing wood shingles is crucial. If it is poorly done, your roof will be very susceptible to moisture that can destroy it over time. Once your roof sheathing paper is nailed down, asphalt strips are commonly added in rows to provide extra protection against the elements. Finally, the shingles are nailed down in horizontal rows that slightly overlap each other.
