How to Deal With a Drama Queen Employee
- 1). Sit down with your employee and be frank about the problem. Come to the table with the intention to resolve issues and improve productivity, rather than to scold your employee or release your pent-up frustration. Explain that you let inappropriate behavior get out of hand and that it needs to stop.
- 2). Establish the rules of suitable workplace behavior with your drama queen employee. Make sure your employee understands the office dress code, the expectations for office relationships and the appropriate way to raise issues or concerns with you. Be specific.
- 3). Warn your employee of the consequences if she does not change her behavior. Explain that she is damaging morale or productivity in the office, which qualifies as poor job performance. Clearly lay out the consequences of poor job performance, whether they are suspension, reassignment or termination.
- 4). Follow through with the rewards and punishments you have promised. Drama queens are self-centered and may not easily accept that you can run your office without them. Implement the disciplinary actions you discussed.
- 5). Give the drama queen assignments that cater to her strengths if she does improve her behavior. Drama queens are willing to engage with strangers and can be charismatic. Find jobs for your employee that use her gregarious nature effectively, such as hosting meetings.
