How to Install Brake Shoes on a 1991 Corolla
- 1). Park your Toyota Corolla on a flat, level surface and set the parking brake. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheel by turning the lug wrench 1/2-turn on each nut.
- 2). Place a jack under the center of the rear of the Corolla's frame and raise the vehicle until jack stands can be placed under the rear axles.
- 3). Remove the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Remove the wheel and place it off to the side. Leave the lug nuts inside the wheel hub so they're easily found later.
- 4). Pull off the brake drum. If the drum sticks, insert a brake adjustment tool into the access hole on the backing plate and adjust the shoes so they don't grip the drum.
- 5). Remove the actuator return spring with a brake spring tool. Only work on one shoe at a time so the other can be used as a visual aid. Disengage the actuator link by pulling it out of the anchor pin and brake shoe. Remove the hold-down spring assembly with the brake spring tool. Remove the full actuator assembly.
- 6). Pull off the brake shoe. Clean all of the parts with brake parts cleaner. Reverse the above steps to install the new shoe then repeat the above process for the second shoe.
- 7). Remount the brake drum and the wheel. Tighten all of the lug nuts by hand. Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle with the jack. Finish tightening the lug nuts with the lug wrench.
