DIY CPU Cooling
- 1). Locate the CPU on the motherboard of the computer.
- 2). Place a small drop of thermal paste, about the size of a pea, in the center of the CPU.
- 3). Smooth the thermal paste across the die (the area of semi-conducting material) of the CPU with the plastic bag. Make sure the coverage is even and complete over the die.
- 4). Align the heatsink over the screw holes on the motherboard surrounding the CPU.
- 5). Screw the heatsink into the hole with the screwdriver. Do not over-tighten, but make sure they are hand-tight. If the heatsink is not secured properly it can vibrate when in use and damage the CPU. Some heatsinks use locking clamps as opposed to screws. If this is the case, you merely need to lock the clamp down to hold the heatsink in place.
- 6). Plug the fan power cable into the corresponding three-prong power slot on the motherboard. if you are unsure as to the location of this port, the motherboard diagram will tell you exactly where it is.
- 7). Plug the power cord back into the computer and turn it on. Check to make sure the fan turns on and it does not vibrate.
