Mastermind one of the most watched quiz shows in British television, is known for its challenging questions based on a contestant's chosen subject matter.
The questions being intimidating in nature assists with the creation of an intimidating and serious air for which the show is well known for.
The first airing of the show was on the 11th September 1972.
The show is the original brainchild of Bill Wright.
Who drew the inspirations and basic ideas for the show format, from his experiences having been interrogated by the Gestapo during The Second World War.
Throughout the years format of the show has never altered, four contestants face two rounds whilst seated in the black leather chair, illuminated by a single spotlight.
One round regarding general knowledge the other on a specialized subject of the contestant's choice.

Although the format of the show has remained the same the show itself has seen numerous related versions being launched, the most well known are,
- Celebrity Mastermind the format was the same as the original program, however with the winner of each show having been warded a trophy.
- International Mastermind this format of the show had contestant from across the world compete against each other, the show only aired for 5 seasons.
- Junior Mastermind a junior version of the show where the contestants were aged 10 and 11 and aired for five seasons for 6 nights a week on BBC 1.
- Sport Master mind the newest version that is based on sports and aired in 2008
The most well known are:
- Monty Python's alumni Michael Palin was featured in a sketch as Magnús Magnússon and Terry Giliam as a contestant specializing in questions with the answer is equal to two.
- The Two Ronnies, was one of the most memorable was a sketches featuring Ronnie Baker as Magnús Magnússon and Corbett as the contestant Charlie Smithers.
- Benny Hill, was known to parody at least twice on his show the Benny Hill show, on having been titled "Masterbane".
