    Walls

    • Tuscan-style decor graces this living room.

Paint your walls a warm shade of yellow. Apply faux finishing techniques to create the look of aging artisan plaster. Try a ragging-on technique by painting the walls in a yellow base color. Let it dry. Make a glaze out of slightly darker shade of yellow, consisting of one part paint and four parts glaze. Dip a bunched-up rag into the glaze and apply it to the wall to create the faux texture of plaster. You can also apply these techniques using wall colors such as Mediterranean blue, earthy reds and oranges, or lighter shades of olive green. Hang one large tapestry above a fireplace or hang it on a wall. Create several trompe l'oeil around the home in botanical themes.

    Furniture

    • Choose large pieces of heavy furniture in rich, dark brown stains. Find tall cabinets with open display shelves for fine china or objets d'art. Put a hallway bench with thick tops and wide, round legs in your entry way. For the dining room, use a large buffet table and a rustic a rectangular dining room table, with upholstered chairs. Iron and copper detailing is also part of the Tuscan design theme. Choose side tables and accent tables with wrought iron bases and polished wood tops in dark stains. Place them on either side of a large leather couch, with finished wood trim.

    Accessories

    • Place brightly colored ceramic jars on accent tables and coffee tables. Use decorative pillows in soft fabrics such as chenille and silk with tassels and fringe on them. Attach wrought iron sconces with candles to your hallway and dining room walls. Find pieces of elaborately designed iron grill work and hang them on the walls. Drape deep orange cotton throws over a chair, with a contrasting pillow. Find large pieces of colorful, hand-painted ceramic containers and display them in your kitchen and on the fireplace mantel.

    Ceilings

    • Add wood beams to your ceiling for a more pronounced Tuscan look. Exposed beams were a part of many farmhouse interiors in centuries past, and adding them to your home on a purely decorative basis will create the feeling of an old farmhouse or an old village home in Tuscany. Or have a mural painted on your ceiling of pale blue skies and white clouds with an angel hovering overhead. Surround the room in carved crown molding, covered in faux gold leaf. Add a painted wrought iron or copper ceiling light fixture and an elegant ceiling medallion over the dining room table.

    Floors

    • Cover your floors in rustic wide-plank hardwood. Finish them with a rich wood stain and semi-gloss sealer. Place runners and area rugs on the floors made of cotton or wool in antique designs in shades of burnished gold and deep terra cotta red. You can also cover your floors in concrete and apply a gold acrylic or brown acid stain with a high-shine finish. A traditional option is terra cotta tile, which lends a rustic yet finished look.

    Exteriors

    • The traditional Tuscan home uses terra cotta roof tiles and has a stucco exterior. To give your home a Tuscan look, tint the stucco a light shade of yellow for an aged appearance. Make a path out of stone pavers and place green and flowering plants along the sides in terra cotta pots. A Tuscan home should create the feeling that the outdoors is being brought indoors, so make the entrance to your home feel welcoming and cheerful with large, Mediterranean blue flower pots and a softly arched doorway.
