How to Install Swag Lights
- 1). Center your swag light over your dining area or in an area of your room that is in need of more light. Mark the location on your ceiling with a pencil where you want to install your first swag hook, which will hold the light.
- 2). Locate the ceiling joists using a stud finder. Mark that location and drill a 3/16-inch pilot into the ceiling joist using a wood drill bit. Hand twist the swag hook into the pilot hole until snug against the ceiling. If you cannot locate a ceiling joist in your desired location, install a toggle bolt. Drill a hole into the ceiling the same size as your toggle bolt with the toggle flaps closed. Slip your toggle bolt swag hook into the hole and hand tighten until snug against the ceiling.
- 3). Install the second hook for your swag lamp. Choose a location in your ceiling close to the wall for the ceiling and wall meet, preferably close to an electrical outlet so that you can plug in your fixture. If there is a ceiling joist to install your second hook, repeat the process of installing a swag hook into the ceiling joist as in Step 2. If you cannot locate a ceiling joist to install your second swag hook, repeat the process of installing a toggle bolt swag hook.
- 4). Hang your swag light at the desired height from the ceiling. Place the chain from your swag light into the first swag hook. Attach the chain into the second swag hook, allowing a length of chain to "swag" between the two hooks. Let the balance of the chain hang down the wall and plug the swag light into the wall outlet.
