How to Change the Starter Cord on a Poulan String Trimmer
- 1). Move the Poulan trimmer’s ignition switch to the “Off” position. Unscrew the starter cover from the back of the trimmer. Remove the starter cover and flip it over to change the cord.
- 2). Place your thumb on the pulley and cut the cord’s knot at the base of the pulley. Cut the cord just below the starter handle. Lift up your thumb to slowly let out tension on the recoil spring.
- 3). Remove the old cord from the pulley and discard. Place the end of the new cord into the center of the pulley. Work the cord through the hole and pull it all the way through. Push the cord through the starter cover and the starter handle.
- 4). Tie a knot in each end of the cord to secure it to the pulley and the handle. Wind all but 10 inches of cord onto the pulley. Form a loop in the unwound section. Pinch the loop and wiggle it back and forth to hook the pulley to the recoil spring.
- 5). Wind the loop and pulley four to six times, following the arrow on the pulley. Unfurl the cord while holding the pulley in place. Let go of the pulley slowly to bring the cord back onto the pulley. Turn the cover over and attach it to the trimmer.
