How to Loosen a Trumpet

    • 1). Hold the trumpet over a sink or drain and slide the spit valve latch toward you. As the liquid exits the valve, tilt the bell downward so any liquid that has gathered higher up in the conical tube trickles down toward the valve.

    • 2). Hold the trumpet with your left hand. Place the bell flat on your lap.

    • 3). Immerse the end of a pipette into a bottle of rubbing alcohol. Squeeze the rubber end so the pipette sucks up the liquid.

    • 4). Place the pipette on a towel, so if any leaks it won't cause a mess.

    • 5). Unscrew the valve caps. If the valves are stubborn, hold the end of the pipette above the gap between the valve cap and valve, and squeeze the rubber end to release one droplet of rubbing alcohol. Gently twist the valve cap. If it is still no good, drop a few more droplets of rubbing alcohol into the gap and gently shake the trumpet to distribute it.

    • 6). Place the valve cap to one side.

    • 7). Unscrew the valves. Twist them clockwise to loosen them. If they are stubborn, drip a little rubbing alcohol into the gap between the valve and body of the trumpet.

    • 8). Hold the trumpet as if you're about to play it. Pull the topmost slide toward you until it comes out of its slot. Again, use rubbing alcohol on the outside of the slide to loosen it if stubborn. Remove the remaining slides in the same way. Once you've removed the slides all that remains is the body of trumpet and horn. Everything that can be detached has been.
