How to Type Faster on the Keyboard
everything from replying to emails, sending Tweets, updating your Facebook activities or writing longer reports requires some kind of keyboard skill.
So when even a handful of characters seems to take forever to type out, it's time to learn how to type faster on the keyboard.
1.
Check your posture If you're slouched down or your keyboard isn't in a good position to type, it will affect the speed at which you can tap out your words.
So adjust your chair, adjust your screen and adjust your keyboard (and how your hands relate to it) to get into the most comfortable position to type away.
2.
Move up from one or two fingers Despite what the purists may claim, you can actually type quite fast with one finger on each hand plus your thumb to hit the space bar.
But moving up from even one finger to two (one on each hand) will work wonders for your typing speed.
Because each finger has less distance to travel - because it's only got to think about half the keyboard - you'll more than double your typing speed just with this simple trick.
If you can improve further to use maybe three or four fingers plus your thumb, you'll be close to the best touch typist speeds without the hassle of having to actually learn touch typing.
3.
Stop looking at the keyboard Sure, you'll need to look when you need to find a weird character that's hiding on top of the numbers somewhere.
But for the regular characters and punctuation that you use day in, day out, you shouldn't need to look at the keyboard - looking at the screen will give you all the feedback you need.
This is awkward at first.
So you may have to devise some kind of screen that stops you glancing down at the keyboard all the time.
And it will almost certainly cause a frustrating drop in typing speed when you take your gaze away from the keyboard at first.
But keep at it and after a few hours or days you'll find that your speed has improved.
4.
Improve your accuracy The less times you have to hit the delete or the backspace key, the faster your overall typing will be.
So focus at least a bit on how accurately you're typing.
If you're hitting delete every third keypress then halving that to every sixth press will have a nice positive effect on your typing speed.
5.
Get help from your computer It's not as easy on a web browser but your word processor will have an auto correct feature.
This comes pre-set with lots of common errors but you can add your own regular typos to it as well.
How to do this varies between versions and the help isn't always helpful on things like this.
So check out YouTube for a video tutorial instead - there'll almost certainly be one to show you exactly what you need to do.
