    Survival Scenario Exercise

    • This is a classic communication game that is very effective in terms of improving communication skills, and also helping with decision making. In this activity, give a group a list of 30 or more items that they have with them on an airplane. Then tell them that the airplane has crashed and they can only choose 12 items. Have the group decide which 12 items are most important, and then rank them in order of importance. This will encourage communication, as well as team-building, as the group works toward a common goal of survival.

    Charade Introduction

    • In a group of people, ask everyone to pair off. Once in pairs, each person must introduce himself to his partner and explain one unique thing about himself. Then, the partner must introduce that person's unique quality to the rest of the group. The catch is, the partner cannot use words or verbal cues in the introduction --- he must use actions to show the rest of the group the one thing that is unique about his partner. This helps encourage different forms of communication, besides just words.

    Logos

    • In a group setting, explain that society is often impacted by branding --- many people recognize logos from brand-name corporations, such as the Arches of McDonald's or the Bullseye of Target. Ask each person in the group to draw her own logo. Then, she must mingle within the group to find logos that are similar to hers, and discuss why she drew their logo that way. This will help people learn a little bit about each other through visual and verbal communication.

    Middle Name Game

    • One communication game that brings the group together on a more personal level is the middle name game. Each person in the group must reveal his middle name, and then discuss how or why he was given that name. Group members are encouraged to ask questions about the different names, what that person thinks of his middle name and anything else that may come to mind. It helps the group communicate better as a whole, and feel a sense of bonding as well.
