Home Health Aides give their patients regular healthcare they need that includes grooming, bathing, dressing, taking care of the elderly and disabled persons in their own homes or in nursing care facilities.
Various tasks must be done together with this routine.
Maintenance of a patient's record of condition, problems and progress must be done and reported to the supervising nurse.
When medications are prescribed and the nurse authorizes a home health aide to administer this to the patient, the task has to be done at the doctor's prescribed time.
Planning, preparing of meals, taking a patient to the doctor's office for a scheduled check up, providing a patient and family members the emotional support they need, giving guidance to do things right such as adapting to family disabilities and illnesses are only some of the many tasks that the home health aide needs to accomplish regularly.
Complete training must be undergone before one assumes the job of a home health aide.
Reason for this is that a person needs to learn the skills and possess the knowledge to perform the various responsibilities efficiently.
A home health aide must have active listening skills to be able to quickly understand when other people especially his patient tells him something.
It is important that he knows how to listen so that instructions given by doctors or immediate nurse supervisors will be carried out correctly.
Service Orientation is another thing that a home health aide must learn.
He has to be sensitive to other people's needs and must know when it is time to assist them.
He also needs to have a quick mind to think fast when emergency cases arise while caring for his patient.
Speaking clearly is also another quality one must learn and retain to be able to effectively communicate with the patient.
This is equally important when updating family members of the patient's condition and when reporting observations to the supervising nurse.
A home health aide must have certain abilities to be able to record and report information accurately.
He has to possess the ability to collate multiple data and analyze this carefully to obtain a correct result that will help in finding ways to improve the condition of the patient.
Recognizing the way other people talk especially the elderly patients is another ability one should have so that the patient's needs are addressed correctly at the first call.
Understanding detailed information, doing detailed work such as grouping data after identifying them, providing estimations, looking for similarities or differences, detecting when certain changes happen are crucial tasks that a home health aide must do.
He must have the knowledge of how to handle medical instruments that are regularly used to avoid errors.
The duties that home health aides perform matters that not everyone has the capacity to face.
Training alone is not enough as one has to have the interest and gift of patience to accomplish this noble job for without these, one will face each day with difficulty.
