How to Make a Fabric Headboard
- 1). Cut the plywood slightly wider than the width of the mattress, selecting a simple rectangle or curved top headboard design. Sand the edges smooth. Place paper under the plywood and create a template for the fabric, allowing twelve inches all around the headboard.
- 2). Put aside the template and cut the foam the exact size of the plywood. Lay the plywood and foam on the floor or surface to prepare for the layer of batting.
- 3). Cut the batting material five to six inches wider all around the plywood and foam and secure by randomly stapling around the headboard. This will tack it down while you prepare the fabric.
- 4). Use the template to cut out the fabric. Select a thick, durable upholstery fabric that will compliment your decor. Lay the fabric, the assembled batting and then the foam-covered plywood, face down and begin to cover the headboard.
- 5). Staple the center top and bottom, then the center of each side. Tightly begin to secure the fabric by stapling around and easing the corners in neatly. Trim all excess fabric. Turn the entire headboard facing up.
- 6). Attach the headboard to the wall by installing flush mounts, which can be purchased at your local hardware store or building center, screwed to the wall studs behind the bed. This will provide a stationary headboard, unless you desire to add legs. If so, cut a pair of two by three inch legs, adjusted to the desired height, and screw securely on each end of the headboard. Propping the headboard behind the bed would allow for mobility, in the event of moving the bed around.
