National Court Reporters Association-certified programs usually require a minimum of 225 words per minute, which is also required to work for the federal government as a reporter. Some states require voice writers to pass a test and be licensed. To waive the license requirement, the National Verbatim Reporters Association offers three national certifications to voice writers: Certified Verbatim Reporter (CVR), Certificate of Merit (CM) and Real-Time Verbatim Reporter (RVR). The average salary for a court reporter is between $25,360 and $83,500 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
