Radio Internship Duties

    • Radio stations compete with other stations in their own markets as well as with satellite radio networks that offer programs on-demand. The familiarity and versatility of traditional radio continues to bring listeners to the medium, as well as performers interested in becoming involved as hosts, producers or sales people. Interning during your college years or afterward will provide you with first-hand knowledge of 21st century radio, in whichever area that interests you.

    Programming

    • Interns gain valuable experience booking guests, editing and producing segments, archiving shows and screening calls for live shows. As an intern becomes more familiar with the show, he might also develop or pitch story ideas for the radio program. Eventually, an intern might even produce or host a half-hour segment.

    Sales

    • Radio stations often depend on advertising to support their budgets. Interns with sales experience might make cold calls to potential new advertisers or upsell current accounts to convince clients to buy larger advertising slots. In addition to working at the station, interns travel to clients' places of business.

    Programs and Web Development

    • Interns often engage with the larger audience for radio stations. Promotional responsibilities range from developing advertisements to organizing and attending live promotional events. Interns familiar with Web development and social media, might develop and update the station's website and social media presence.
