How to Test a 240 Volt Wire
- 1). Wear protective rubber gloves to insulate yourself from the electricity supply if you accidentally touch live wire.
- 2). Use a 240-volt tester. These tester are clearly labeled for this voltage and can be found at electrical supply stores.
- 3). Insert the 240-volt tester into the electrical socket. It has prongs the same as a regular plug. Check the display. The tester will have two or three light-emitting diode (LED) lights. All the LED lights illuminate if the 240-volt wiring is correct. If any of the LED lights fail to illuminate, it indicates there may be a problem with your wiring.
- 4). Remove the 240-volt tester from the electrical socket. If all the LED lights illuminated during the test, it's safe to plug in your appliance. If one or more LED lights didn't illuminate, do not use the socket. Get a qualified electrician to examine and correct the wiring.
