Hints for "Punch-Out!" for the Wii
- "Punch-Out!" for the Nintendo Wii hearkens back to the original game of the same name for the NES released in 1987, featuring classic fighters such as Glass Joe and Bald Bull. The cartoon action in this boxing game requires players to memorize the patterns of their opponents to beat them and advance in the Video Game Boxing Association circuits.
- Many fighters flash yellow very briefly during a match. If you throw a punch immediately after the flash you will earn a star. The star will allow you to throw an uppercut and do massive damage to the other fighters.
- Once you earn stars make sure you use them. In general, you want to use the knockout punch quickly because you lose a star any time you take a hit from an opponent. A knockout punch will take about a third of the energy meter of a fighter away, so if you use it when you have chipped away two-thirds of an opponent's energy meter you should score a knockdown.
- You can refill some of your own energy meter while your opponent is on the mat. After scoring a knockdown quickly press the "1" and "2" buttons in conjunction to slowly refill your meter. You usually won't gain an inordinate amount of energy back, but the little you refill could make the difference between winning and losing the bout.
- The strange-looking creature is tricky to beat unless you figure out his weakness. When King Hippo lifts his arm for a big punch he will open his mouth. Quickly punch him in the chompers. This will cause his shorts to loosen and he will start tugging them. Take this chance to give him body blows on the tape over his belly button. Repeat this pattern to score a knockout on King Hippo.
