- 1). Gather materials as well as the necessary tools. Make sure that the room you are working in has a large, even and flat worktable surface. You should order precut hardwood boards as much as you can to avoid extra work. For this project, you will need 3/8-by-1 ½ inch hardwood slats, but you could also use ½- by-1 inch slats, as well. As for the lengths, you will need pieces 12 to 14 inches for the seat and the back. For the seat part, you will need two 20-to 30-inch hardwood slats and for the back part two 40-to 50-inch slats.
- 2). Cut the hardwood boards if they are not precut. Use a power saw and measure and mark the right place. Ensure the pairs of slats are exactly the same. Treat the cut edges of the slats with sandpaper, using a coarse grit at first and then moving to a finer grit.
- 3). Assemble one pair of hardwood slats in the shape of an irregular `x`. One longer (40-to 50-inch) piece needs to be attached to a shorter (20- to 30-inch) piece roughly somewhere near the center of the shorter piece. This `x` shape will be one side of the chair. Use 1-inch stainless steel screws to attach the two hardwood slats. First mark the holes then cut them with a power drill. Repeat for the other side of the chair.
- 4). Connect the two sides of the chair with a single wooden board placed under the seat area. Use the stainless steel screws for this task as well.
- 5). Add another wooden board at the end of the shorter slats, under the front of the seat, for extra support. With this vertical element and the one from the previous step, you will now have the basic construction frame of your beach chair, missing only the seating and back slats.
- 6). Attach the thin wooden slats for the seat and the back to the completed frame. Use the same screws for this part of the task, making sure to tighten them with a screwdriver. Note that all slats have to be the same distance from one another.
- 7). Treat the wood with the usual coats of stain and finish. Always sand the surface before applying the stain and allow the surface to dry in between the layers.
