Advice For Choosing And Installing An Extractor Fan
Firstly you need to ensure you buy the right one for the job, as fans come in all shapes and sizes, with many designed for very specific purposes, such as a fan for a bathroom or an extractor fan for a commercial kitchen.
You would be best advised to talk to a specialist before buying your fan, as if you buy one that is too small you will just waste money fitting it, and then taking it out and fitting a bigger one.
This is a common case when fitting fans in toilets.
You also need to think about where you are going to fit your extractor fan.
Is there power where you need it? Is there an outside wall you can fit it too? A classic example would be buying a through wall fan, but not noticing you have not got an outside wall to put it through! For some applications you will be governed by law as to where you can fit the fan, and what type of fan you can fit.
This is particularly so in areas of damp such as shower rooms.
The larger the application the more likely you will need to consult a specialist.
A specialist will advise on power requirements and installation, for an example you would not try and fit a commercial kitchen extractor fan yourself due to the size and weight.
Also they will be able to advise on the right size fan for the size of the room you have.
You may choose to install a small extractor fan yourself, however you will need a substantial size hole cutter and hammer drill to fit even a six inch fan.
It can be done, but if you do not have these tools already, then it is probably cheaper to get your electrician to do the whole installation, as the chances are they will already have the tools.
It simply is not worth buying these tools for a one off job.
And speaking of electricians, whilst you may be capable of wiring up an extractor fan, in many countries it is now illegal for anyone but a qualified electrician to do so.
You will need to get a certificate of compliance from them when they have finished the work.
If not, or you choose to do it yourself, then you may be almost certainly be breaking the law.
So buy your extractor fan from a professional company.
