Directions to Make Material Covered Lampshades

    • 1). Make a pattern by laying your current lampshade on the newspaper and rolling it as you mark the edges from seam back to seam.

    • 2). Draw a line 1 inch out from this line, all the way around the pattern. This will be an allowance for the hems and seams.

    • 3). Cut this shape out with scissors.

    • 4). Hold the pattern up to the lampshade and make certain it is the correct size and shape.

    • 5). Lay the fabric flat on a work surface and pin the pattern to the material.

    • 6). Cut the covering out of the fabric.

    • 7). Turn the edge that will overlap in 1/2 inch and press with a hot iron.

    • 8). Dilute the glue with water until it is the consistency of syrup. Stir until it is smooth and uniform.

    • 9). Apply glue around the top, bottom and along the seam with a 1/2-inch brush.

    • 10

Lay the new fabric onto the shade starting at the seam and placing the raw edge onto this line. Position the material so the extra 1 inch extends out from the top and the bottom of the shade frame. Pull slightly on the fabric to create a flat surface without any wrinkles or air bubbles.

Apply another line of diluted glue on top of the new fabric at the beginning seam and place the ironed edge in this position.

    • 12

Apply glue solution to the inside area at the top and bottom of the shade.

    • 13

Fold the bottom excess up under the edge and secure in place with clothes pins. Make certain this is taut.

    • 14

Snip slices down into the excess fabric that extends above the top rim with scissors; place these slices at 1/2-inch intervals. This will allow the top to be turned and stay flat.

    • 15

Turn this snipped edge over and tighten any slack; fasten with clothespins. This is the last opportunity to make certain that the shade is tight---gently pull on this edge as you turn and glue it in place.

Wait 15 minutes and remove one clothespin to check for good adhesion. When it appears that all edges are bonding, remove all the clothespins. Keep watch so you can remove the clothespins before they possibly get glued onto the fabric. The thickness of the fabric you use is a variable in this procedure.
