Scribing Tools for Metal

    • A metal scribing tool is most commonly used to draw a straight cutting line or trace around the counter of a shape that will be cut from the metal. Metal scribing tools can also be used to write letters and create designs on metal. They eliminate the need for marking metal with lines that could disappear while cutting or working with the metal.

    Carbide Tip

    • A carbide-tipped scribe looks like a pencil and has a pocket clip. The carbide tip extends from the scribing end and has a sharp point. It can mark hardened steel, sheet metal, glass, ceramics and plastics.

    Scratch Awl

    • A scratch awl is sold in several tip sizes. It has a handle similar to that of a screwdriver. The metal end comes to a sharp point instead of a screw point. The scratch awl can also be used to punch holes in light-gauge metal, plastic, leather and wood.

    Pocket Size

    • A pocket-size sheet metal scribe has 10 precut scribe distance points cut into the tool. It is used to measure distances from the edge of galvanized steel. The point that marks each depth is a sharp duel-edged point that scores the steel parallel to the edge of the metal. The depth markers are from 1/8 to 1 inch deep.
