Music Chord and Form of Music

What are music chords?

In general, three or more notes played simultaneously will build a chord. This means if you hit your fingers on three or more keys on your keyboard, it will create a chord technically.

If the chord is built right, the notes are played in harmony, and it will sound like magic. If not, it sounds very weird, and you feel that it’s “wrong.” If you play three notes randomly on your keyboards, it may be a good example of a poor constructed chord.

Triad

A triad is a combination of three music notes that are commonly used in music. They are built of thirds. The bottom note is called the “root.” The second note of the triad is the “third” since it is the third interval away from the root of the chord (see the image below). The last note is the “fifth” because it is the fifth interval from the root.

Minor chords and Major chords

There are two types of triads: Major Triad (Major Chords) and Minor Triad (Minor Chords). For easier understanding these chords, let’s call them the “happy chords” and the “sad chords,” because major chords will make you feel joyful and the minor chords will make you feel depressing.

Simply, the difference of the major chords and the minor chords is that, the “third” of the minor chord is flat, this means its pitch is slightly lower than the pitch of the major third. The roots and the fifths are the same.

Seventh Chords:

You may think that a seventh chord is a triad with one more note on it; this note is the seventh interval from the root. Seventh chords are not exactly sad nor happy.

What are forms of music?

Form is the blueprint, which is used to create a specific type of music. Although things like melodies, key signatures, or themes are all up to you, all songs have the beginning, the middle, the verse, and the chorus, etc. All of these build a complete song. This means if you want to write a song, there is already a blueprint for you. What you need to do is just to follow it and fill in the blank. However, even there are already patterns for you, there is still a big challenge that you have to make an outstanding song based on the same form.

Some musical forms;

A: One-part form. In a one-part form, a simple melody is repeated with slight changes. One example is the song “Old McDonald Had a Farm.” The song may be long or short, but it is always something like A, AA, AAAA, or AAAAAA, etc.

AB: Include 2 contrasting sections. An example of this is the song Greensleeves, which is AABB.

ABA: The B section is the link between the two A sections An example of this musical form is the song Twinkle Little Star. Pop styles are usually AABA while Blues is often AAB or AABA.

ABCBA: This form consists of three parts: A, B and C

Some examples of a good layout:

1. IVCVCBC:

Introduction (I): The introduction sets the mood and is usually instrumental.
Verse (V): Begins the song.
Chorus (C): The most memorable lyrical points of the song.
Verse (V): Another verse continuing the story
Chorus (C): Reinforcing the hook.
Bridge (B) This part may be instrumental or lyrical.
Chorus (C) Repeat chorus to fade, or just stop at the chord 1.

2. 32-bar layout:
